Solar panels

Energy Efficiency

In 2019 AIG started managing the Wirib Store and Tourism Park on behalf of the Gunamu Aboriginal Corporation. At the time, the park’s expenditures were exceeding its income, and immediate improvements were needed to keep the store and park open.

The biggest operating expense for the Wirib Store and Tourism Park in Timber Creek was their power consumption so it was decided through consultations with the owners that solar power would be a good way to reduce operating costs.

Funded by an ABA grant from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the solar panels were put on the roof of the store with the aim of:

  • Reducing electricity costs for the Wirib Store and Tourism Park
  • Investment in Indigenous owned business
  • Improved employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal community members
  • Reduction in greenhouse gas emission through using renewable energy
